Identifying Naked Subsets is the most important skill for moving from intermediate to advanced Sudoku solving. By using these targeted worksheets, you build the vision required to spot patterns of matching candidates across rows, columns, and blocks, permitting eliminations that clear the path to victory.
Instead of hoping to find a Naked Triple in a random puzzle, take control of your training. This page provides high-quality, printable Naked Subset Sudoku PDFs that let you practice the same high-level grouping framework until it becomes second nature.
Expert coaches suggest **4 Puzzles Per Page + Candidates**. Since Naked Subsets rely on seeing matching candidates in specific cells, having candidates pre-filled lets you focus 100% on the grouping geometry instead of the manual effort of marking every cell yourself.
A Naked Subset is a grouping of N cells within a single house (row, column, or block) that contain exactly N candidates. For example, a Naked Triple is 3 cells containing exactly 3 digits. No other digit can exist in those cells, and those digits cannot exist elsewhere in that house.
Naked Pairs, Triples, and Quads share the exact same logical foundation. By practicing them together, you learn to see the varying "sizes" of the same pattern, making you a more versatile and capable solver under pressure.
A Naked Subset occurs when N cells in a row, column, or block contain exactly N candidates. These candidates can be eliminated from all other cells in that same house. This category includes Naked Pairs (2 cells), Triples (3 cells), and Quads (4 cells).
They are called "Naked" or "Explicit" because the candidates involved are visible within the cells themselves. Unlike Hidden Subsets, you don't need to look for where a digit *must* go; you look for where it is restricted to.
Naked Pairs are extremely common and are a staple of intermediate solving. Naked Triples and Quads are rarer and significantly harder to spot without pre-filled candidates.
We recommend starting with Level 5 or 6 puzzles with Candidates. This allows you to practice the "geometric" recognition of subset patterns without the distraction of filling in every mark yourself.
Naked Subsets eliminate *other* digits from the same house. Hidden Subsets eliminate the *other digits in those specific cells*. They are two sides of the same logical coin.
After you have mastered explicit subsets, explore these other advanced logical families for your printable Sudoku practice pack.
